In Part\u00a02 of our series for business owners in Liverpool, the North West, and North Wales, we shift from personal privacy to <strong>business risk<\/strong>. When your images (or those of your staff and brand) go online, <strong>malicious actors can misuse them in alarming ways<\/strong>. Let\u2019s explore how <strong>\u201cgiving away your face\u201d can lead to deepfake scams, brand impersonation, data breaches, and real-world damage.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deepfakes: Beyond Fun to Fraud<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By now, many have seen entertaining deepfake videos \u2013 like famous actors\u2019 faces swapped in movies \u2013 and had a good laugh. But deepfake tech has a dark side for businesses. <strong>Criminals are using AI to clone voices and images to impersonate real executives and employees.<\/strong> In one infamous case, fraudsters used AI voice cloning to mimic a CEO\u2019s voice and convinced a UK company\u2019s director to transfer <strong>$243,000<\/strong> to a fake supplier\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/vinfo\/us\/security\/news\/cyber-attacks\/unusual-ceo-fraud-via-deepfake-audio-steals-us-243-000-from-u-k-company#:~:text=An%20unusual%20case%20of%20CEO,facilitate%20an%20illegal%20fund%20transfer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trendmicro.com<\/a>. The voice was so convincing that the director truly believed his boss was instructing the transfer. Scammers set up a video meeting using a <strong>fake WhatsApp profile with the CEO\u2019s photo<\/strong>, then during the call they deployed an AI-cloned voice and even deepfake video snippets to impersonate him \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/article\/2024\/may\/10\/ceo-wpp-deepfake-scam#:~:text=Fraudsters%20created%20a%20WhatsApp%20account,solicit%20money%20and%20personal%20details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">theguardian.com<\/a>. Their goal? To trick an <em>agency leader<\/em> into a bogus new venture and siphon funds. Luckily it failed that time \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/article\/2024\/may\/10\/ceo-wpp-deepfake-scam#:~:text=well%20as%20YouTube%20footage%20of,solicit%20money%20and%20personal%20details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">theguardian.com<\/a> \u2013 but many firms haven\u2019t been as lucky. A Hong Kong company wasn\u2019t so fortunate when a deepfake video call of their CFO led to a <strong>$25 million loss<\/strong> in a fraud scheme\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/en_us\/research\/24\/b\/deepfake-video-calls.html#:~:text=Over%20the%20weekend%C2%A0a%20Hong%20Kong,financial%20officer%20via%20video%20conferencing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trendmicro.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These examples underscore a chilling point: <strong>your images and voice can be weaponized against you or your business<\/strong>. All it takes is a publicly available photo (say, your LinkedIn headshot) and a sample of your voice from a conference video. With that, attackers can create a video or audio that <em>looks and sounds<\/em> like you. <strong>If your face data is also floating around from an AI app, it\u2019s even easier<\/strong> \u2013 those services provide high-quality, front-facing images that are perfect deepfake fodder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brand Impersonation and Reputation Risks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not only internal finances at risk \u2013 your <strong>brand\u2019s reputation<\/strong> can be hijacked with AI. Consider how a bad actor might use your company logo and an image of you (the owner) to create a fake social media profile or a misleading advertisement. We\u2019re already seeing this with public figures: deepfakes of Elon Musk have been used to promote cryptocurrency scams \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/texas\/news\/deepfakes-ai-fraud-elon-musk\/#:~:text=Deepfakes%20of%20Elon%20Musk%20are,is%20his%20wealth%20and%20entrepreneurship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cbsnews.com<\/a> \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/dfrlab.org\/2024\/09\/25\/musk-deepfake-crypto-scam\/#:~:text=Crypto,of%20Musk%20to%20solicit%20investments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dfrlab.org<\/a>. Now imagine a scammer making a deepfake of <em>you<\/em> welcoming customers to a fake investment scheme, or a phony video of your CEO making false announcements. For customers or partners who don\u2019t know better, that <em>deepfake press release or video<\/em> could trick them into clicking malicious links or believing wrong information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such impersonation can wreak havoc. <strong>Years of building trust in your brand can be undermined overnight by a convincing fake.<\/strong> If a fraudulent deepfake message circulates \u2013 say an announcement that your company is recalling products or a bogus \u201cpersonal\u201d appeal from you asking for charitable donations \u2013 the <strong>damage control falls on you<\/strong>. You\u2019ll spend days reassuring people it wasn\u2019t real, by which time the scam may have already hurt some victims and your company\u2019s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember, <strong>deepfakes thrive on stolen images and footage<\/strong>. The more of your face (and key staff faces) that are freely available online, the easier it is for attackers to create believable fakes. Handing over your photos to an AI generator might also provide a would-be imposter with multiple stylized versions of your face (from different angles, in different lighting), effectively a portfolio to train their deepfake model. It\u2019s an unintended consequence few consider in the moment of \u201cwow, this avatar looks cool.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Breaches and Unintended Exposure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Business risks aren\u2019t always as dramatic as deepfake fraud, but they can be just as damaging in the long run. When you upload images to a third-party AI service, you\u2019re <strong>trusting that provider to secure your data<\/strong>. What if they don\u2019t? A data breach at the AI avatar company could leak a trove of user photos. If your photo is among them, it could end up in all kinds of unwanted places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider the sensitivity: some photos people upload aren\u2019t meant for public eyes (perhaps you tried an avatar app with an ID badge photo or an internal team picture). If those get breached, not only is personal privacy violated, but potentially <strong>company-sensitive information<\/strong> could leak too. For example, an innocuous team selfie might reveal your office layout, security badges, or whiteboards with strategy notes in the background. Once uploaded, you have no deletion guarantee beyond the provider\u2019s word. If their databases get hacked, that image data is in the wild. <strong>Facial data, in particular, is a hot target<\/strong> \u2013 it can be used to cross-reference social media, build fake identities, or train surveillance AI without consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s also the risk of violating others\u2019 privacy and causing a breach that way. <strong>If an employee uploads a group photo to an AI tool without colleagues\u2019 consent, that could constitute an internal data breach of personal data.<\/strong> It only takes one well-meaning staff member experimenting with a new AI app to put your company in a tricky situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Real World Consequences: Cautionary Tales<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To drive it home, let\u2019s summarize a few real incidents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Executive Voice Scam:<\/strong> An employee wired \u00a3200k because a deepfake voice on the phone impersonated his boss convincingly\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/vinfo\/us\/security\/news\/cyber-attacks\/unusual-ceo-fraud-via-deepfake-audio-steals-us-243-000-from-u-k-company#:~:text=An%20unusual%20case%20of%20CEO,facilitate%20an%20illegal%20fund%20transfer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trendmicro.com<\/a>. Imagine your manager \u201con video\u201d telling you to ignore procurement rules and just pay an invoice \u2013 would you catch the fraud?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Major Financial Loss:<\/strong> $25M evaporated from a company\u2019s coffers in Hong Kong via a deepfake of their CFO\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/en_us\/research\/24\/b\/deepfake-video-calls.html#:~:text=Over%20the%20weekend%C2%A0a%20Hong%20Kong,financial%20officer%20via%20video%20conferencing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trendmicro.com<\/a>. While your business might not be global-famous, locally you <em>are<\/em> known \u2013 which could be enough for targeted impersonation in our region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The takeaway for business owners is clear: <strong>misused images can directly impact your bottom line and trustworthiness.<\/strong> This isn\u2019t just hype to scare you \u2013 it\u2019s verified by the surge in corporate-targeted deepfake attacks in the past year \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/article\/2024\/may\/10\/ceo-wpp-deepfake-scam#:~:text=Once%20primarily%20a%20concern%20related,of%20millions%20and%20put%20cybersecurity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">theguardian.com<\/a>.
